Northwest at Morehead

     In a soaking rain last week Morehead fought to a 6-6 tie in Morehead stadium.  Neither team could find any footing for offensive power until the final quarter.

     In the first quarter the Panthers moved to the six yard line but lost the ball on a fumble on the first down.  Then in the second quarter the locals drove to the seven yard line but fumbled again.

     Northwest's halfback Bill Ray scooted 65 yards in the final quarter to score for the visitors.  Later Ken Campbell, Tri-City halfback, ran 30 yards to score for the Panthers and to tie the game.  Yarborough on a plunge for the extra point for the Panthers fell short of an extra point.

     The Morehead Black Panthers will journey to Martinsville, Va., Friday night to meet the Martinsville Bulldogs.

     And many high school students and townspeople will go with them to support the Panthers.  Also the school band will be on hand to cheer the Panthers, providing the weather is not too bad.  New uniforms for the band have been ordered and these will be used Friday night if they arrive in time.

     The Panthers hope to avenge a 28-7 defeat handed them last year to a strong Virginia team.  Martinsville is rated the strongest team this year but the locals are looking forward to an upset.  It will be the second game on the Panthers schedule and the Morehead boys will be trying for their first victory after playing to a 6-6 tie last Friday against Northwest.

Morehead at Martinsville

Panthers Lose Heart-Breaker to Martinsville Bull Dogs 12-7

     The Black Panthers of Morehead High after leading throughout the game, went down to defeat at the hands of Martinsville, 12-7 last Friday night in the Virginia city.

     The Panthers were leading 7-6 about midway in the final period when Jim Gregory, a fleet little halfback, went 49 yards for the clinching TD.

     The Black Panthers got their steam up early in the second period after Jimmy Duggins recovered a fumble on the Martinsville 31.  The Panthers moved to the 5 on runs by Ken and Frank Campbell and then Joe Crowder went over.  Ken Campbell plunged for the extra point and Morehead led 7-6.  Then the Bulldogs went to work.  With Morehead threatening again, the Bulldogs recovered a Panther fumble on their own 28.  In three plays they moved to the Panther 9 and then Jim Draper went the final yard on the third down.  Lusk's kick was wide and the Panthers led 7-6.

     There was no scoring in the third period, but the Panthers got a break when with second and goal on the fourth, Jim Fuqua recovered a Martinsville fumble to stop a drive.  Then Frank Campbell got off a tremendous kick to the Martinsville 47.  Then a few plays later, a Campbell punt went out of bounds on the Panther 49, and Gregory wrote the finish from there.  The Panthers got the ball again on the Martinsville 49 and Ken Campbell ran it to the 24 as the gun sounded.

     Ken Campbell and Joe Crowder stood out for Morehead on offense while Jim Duggins, Jimmy Fuqua,  Ronnie Woods and James Yarborough led the defense.

Hanes at Morehead

     Morehead high school's Black Panthers got their offense rolling in the second half last Friday night to come from behind to defeat Hanes high school of Winston-Salem 7-6.

     It was the first victory of the season for the Black Panthers after a 6-6 tie with Northwest and a 12-7 loss to Martinsville.

    The Panthers roared back in the third period

     Hanes scored their touchdown with time running out in the first half.  A fifteen yard penalty set the Panthers back to their 7 when Frank Campbell kicked to the Panther 40. Jerry Atkins returned to the 24 from where Larry Howman ran to the nine on the first play.  Then four downs later Atkins went over from the one. Knotts' pass to Wadford for the extra point was dropped.

     The Panthers lost a golden opportunity in the first period when they drove to the Hanes 5 only to lose the ball on a fumble. They also moved to the Hanes 39 in the second period when a fumble again stopped the drive.

     Ken Campbell and Joe Crowder led the Panthers on offense. Woods, Duggins, Bell and Fuqua led the defense with Fuqua recovering two Hanes fumbles.

Morehead at Walkertown

     Morehead high school's Black Panthers finally got their offense rolling Friday night and rolled over a weak and inexperienced Walkertown eleven 40-0.  The Black Panther first unit left the game in the second quarter, never to return as the second and third teams completed the rout.

     The Panthers rolled the first time they got the ball, moving 63 yards to a touchdown after the kickoff with Joe Crowder going the final yard for the touchdown, and Frank Campbell adding the extra point on a plunge.  A few moments later the Panthers got the ball again and moved 64 yards in three plays.  Jimmy Walker, subbing for injured Ken Campbell, went 19 and Ronnie Craddock went 36 to the nine, from which point Jimmy Walker took it over on first down.  Campbell again went the two yards for the extra point and the Panthers led 14-0, and the rout was on.  The third touchdown was on a 32-yard drive with Glenn Ogburn going the final two yards and Walker adding the extra point.  Then Ogburn a few plays later hit Joe Crowder with a pass on the 15 and Crowder took it over.  The player covered 22 yards and Ronnie Woods' placement was wide for a 27-0 half time score.

Reidsville at Morehead

     Morehead high school's Black Panthers, showing a glaring weakness on pass defense, went down to defeat at the hands of Reidsville high school's Golden Lions Friday night 12-6.

     The Lions scored their winning touchdown on a pass.  Tommie Clymer to Tommy Collins with about 30 seconds left to play in the game.  The play was good for 12 yards and the ball game.

     The Black Panthers started rolling the first time they got the ball, moving from their own 37 to the Reidsville 17, where they lost the ball on a fumble.  And then the golden Lions took over and moved 83 yards for their first touchdown.  Passes figured predominantly in the drive with Clymer completing four of five, the payoff being a 25 yard pass to halfback Larry Smith for the touchdown.  The Panthers then roared back.  Ronnie Craddock intercepted a Clymer pass on Reidsville's 45 in the second period.  The Panthers then moved the 45 yards with the payoff being a 12-yard pass from Glenn Ogburn to James Yarborough.  This came after Joe Crowder went 10 yards for a touchdown only to have it called back due to a holding penalty.  Jimmy Walker plunged for the extra point and was short, and the score stood at 6-6.  Both teams had mild threats in the second half until the Golden Lions started their victory drive from the Morehead 38.

     The game was marred by numerous fumbles and penalties to halt drives for both teams.  The Panthers at one time were penalized two consecutive times 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.
